The no more excuses legislation was what I’ve called the first volley in the House battle over energy. There is a “discharge petition” in the House to force this energy bill out of committee and onto the House floor for an actual vote. Needs 218 votes, Tim has come up with 153 so far. This will probably not come about because the “Big Shots” are negotiating now. Harry Reid the head obstacle is even sounding like he is feeling the heat and may be open to compromise. Other Democrats are caving in by varying degrees.

The Democrats are trying to stall as always, stick their heads in the sand, blame it on somebody else. It’s not their fault, they’re only the majority party in control of the House and Senate. What do the people expect them to do. --- Something??
Catskill (D-MO) and Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill) are harping back to the idea that the oil companies should drill on the land they already have leased that they can’t find oil on, before they consider other places. Like it really matters where it comes from.
I quote him from the article. “Beyond that, if there is a suggestion of some new area to go into, I’ll look at it.” Boy that is really big of him. Hope he can find the time in between fund raisers at Greenpeace and the Sierra Club. How condescending can you get. This sure is the party of Change. Well maybe Change any real Change into the same old same old.

He obviously fails to comprehend that the “years of failed energy policy” are the fault of groups like his in their self righteous closed mindedness to compromise. Their fanaticism. Well the people do and they are being forced to become a little fanatic in return and as they start stretching their muscles the public is remembering how nice that brand of freedom feels.
Now it is up to the Republican leaders in the House and Senate. If they could both come together and unite they would have the power needed. What I don’t want to see is this energy bill get watered down. A little here and a little there and we will no doubt fulfill the Democrat prophesy of little change at the pump. The country needs a complete energy effort as Tim Walberg alluded to. An all out effort like the Manhattan project or the Man on the Moon effort.
In my opinion the Republicans are in the right place at the right time to force an energy independence type of bill through. They have to hold their hand and not give in and keep putting the Democrats feet to the fire. It would be nice to see McCain really get behind this. But either way the voters are definitely behind it. All I can say to Boehner and McConnell is: Fight Like Your Country’s Life Depends On It. Because it does.

CAN DO AMERICANS
“CAN DO AMERICA”
The idea of a “Can Do America” vs. a “do nothing America” from a “do nothing Congress” to a “fix it now Congress” is starting to take hold. From a groundswell of the people, first brought to my attention by Newt Gingrich then some congressmen started seeing the same need to do something and struck out nearly alone. I’ve posted before in my “guerilla war” posts about these individuals. I don’t know them personally but I know the feeling that drives them. I’m picking it up by the handfuls where ever and whenever I find it, from The People. It’s that “Can Do” positive attitude. It’s the inspiration that let’s three congressmen stand alone on the House floor after hours and try to start a conversation about doing something about the rising fuel costs. They were Lynn Westmoreland, Tom Price and a conservative leader in the House, Dan Burton. Their struggle was then picked up by the Republican leadership in the House and Senate, namely John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell. The people have finally gotten through to Washington. It was a Republican message a Republican bottom up effort. Now I see the Democrats trying to make it look like they had wanted to drill all along. Somehow it was probably Bush’s fault and the minority party in Congress that stopped them. I think "The People" have had enough of that story. I think they are liking the new "common sense" story they are hearing from the Republicans better.
Our Leadership will be hard pressed to come up with a compromise solution that keeps the "common sense" approach yet still actually produce a bill that increases supply. That seems to be the core Conservative approach that shouldn’t be compromised. Increase production. I just saw Dan Burton’s latest statement on his site, I’ve linked it below. As one of the “guerilla” leaders initially he sums up the whole matter pretty succinctly. My “common sense leadership award” goes to him today.

Let me here restate my thanks to all the leadership for taking the lead so effectively. John Boehner the Leader of the House Republicans is charging full speed ahead. Everyday he is firing from the front lines. He walked out of the Country Club picked up a bayonet and is putting himself out there. He is building it I hope the rest of us will come. The least we can do is to watch his back. Look again at his web site. He is daily coming up with new ideas, keeping the Democrats off balance. He’s now is organizing a tour to help dramatize and publicize the fact that we really can do “all of the above” in regards to becoming energy independent. He is taking the lead showing that Conservative solutions work. The more support we can give him and Mitch McConnell in the Senate, the better compromise we will end up with.
For those of my brethren who complain that John McCain isn't following suit and isn't running a big ad campaign about this. Think of what "bottom up" means. First we had the people complaining about the rising cost of gas. Then a private citizen and a few members of the house and senate, now the leadership has joined. I too hope John McCain will follow, we can sure use his help and he sure could use ours: but this is too big a message to be stopped by one person.
Let’s not bitch later over what we didn’t get, but let us fight now for what we can get. That will also show those who have fought the long fight in the wilderness that it was not in vain. I don’t pretend to know all of the unsung heroes, I just will mention some I’ve found more in the public eye such a Newt Gingrich, Dan Burton, Tom Price, Lynn Westmoreland, and Tim Walberg.
I’ve emailed and talked with them. I want to let them know that they have a following that they have at least my support. Let’s face it I like a pat on the back. They’re human, I want to thank them for going the extra mile.

A Crack In The Dam ??
Jim Webb Senator from Virginia joins his senior Virginian Senator John Warner in calling to lift the drilling ban for natural gas off the coast of Virginia. Right after it was announced we saw a flurry of bad things said about Senator Webb. Notice the comments too.

Webb happens to be a Democrat, while Warner is a Republican. Webb also has been rumored to be on Obama’s short list for VP. What is going on?? Wouldn’t this seeming break with Obama over drilling harm his chances of becoming Barrack’s running mate? The link below dated today seems to have completely forgotten about the previous misstep (?) by Jim Webb, and makes the case as to the good reasons he would bring to the Obama ticket. What is up with that ?? See the article below. Draw your own conclusions.

My conclusion is that as the article says Webb is like a Democratic McCain. A foil to bring in the Hillary supporters. That on the face of it would be a reasonable assumption. With him being a claimed “ Reagan Democrat” in his other life. However, the following quote from the article above seems to be very unlike Reagan indeed more like Lenin.

My idea is that this may give Obama a chance to come up with a partial drilling plan not on his own but through his understanding of the need for his running mate to cling to what? Reagan ?? His military roots? Gee I guess the conspiracy theory thing I’m not so good at. Maybe Webb is just being a Democrat and trying to say anything to get elected again, it is after all his first term. And Obama really isn’t going to pick him as a running mate because he's trying to get elected to his first term himself. And the Media has just had another convenient Alzheimer Moment to help block out the Inconvenient Truth about the energy crisis; that Newt’s “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” petition is so full of common sense and becoming so popular with the voters that there is one who is willing to buck the tide in favor of his constituents. For noble reasons or crash politics, the public is being served when common sense prevails.

Newt's Tsunami
I see that Newt’s message is finally getting some play from the Republican leadership. It’s taken awhile but that’s spilt milk. The important thing is that the leadership is taking notice of what had been an unheeded voice at least by the leadership. Through Newt’s tireless efforts solutions have been formulated through the new media, web 2.0 if you will by him, and that message is resonating with the people of the internet. For Republican virtually an untapped source of votes. Newt has been creating the infra structure to create solutions then market them through the internet. Newt single handedly is bringing the ability to play in the internet age to the Republicans. They are only starting to come to grips with the obvious because they are faced with extermination. This is just the way of things, I guess. I had just hoped that as Republican’s the party of common sense we would of used some before now.
Well enough of my victim hood. Slap my face. Wake me up. Deal with the good news that the message carried by Newt is being brought slowly to the front. The link below is from “That’s Saul” Our State Republican leader. I applaud him for the link to Newt.

Newt’s site is becoming a clearing house for internet information about Republican initiatives. I had posted about the Westmoreland Petition start I had heard on CSPAN. Then when I updated it two days ago there were 23 signatures, and Newt had linked to it with the names. I emailed Pete Hoekstra and reminded him to sign and also to look at the and share his thoughts on the Walberg “Discharge Petition” I haven’t gotten an email back yet but check out the update on the Westmoreland Petition at Newt’s site. I count 123. While it is not enough yet, the gain of 100 is impressive, and the important thing is that 123 legislators so far are willing to put their names to something that promises common sense immediate action. More will follow. I did see Pete’s name on it too. I feel good.

What is the response from the Democrats to date? Trying to hook all this effort to lower costs to getting in bed with Big Oil. Like they will blame it on Bush. Talk about the same old politics as usual. We offer concrete actions to solve a problem and the Dems best shot is to call us names. So what’s new and frankly who cares. This isn’t a school yard at recess. Remember Carvel’s “It’s the economy Stupid” Well that’s as right now as it was then. It’s our pocket books too. Oh I nearly forgot their other solutions like walk to work or like Democratic Governor Granholm’s memorable solution for nearly bankrupt state of Michigan the recently former auto capital of the world. Ride a bike to work. That really helps the auto workers. I wonder how much of the UAW funds went into that solution to our problems? Maybe some auto workers are thinking a secret ballot isn’t such a bad idea in the Unions. We can also cut our usage and get us out of this, of course we have to understand that for some like algore it’s ok to raise their electric by 10%.

One of Obama’s favorite sayings is to claim he is against politics as usual. He’s accusing McCain continuously of being a Washington insider. In the link below John McCain accuses Obama of having a pre Sept. 10 mindset.

While the article asks a valid point: whether or not Obama is naïve or not. To me that was not the instructive point in the article. I walked away from the piece with the opinion that Obama is indeed very adept at “politics as usual” He tried to turn the argument around to the same old same old mantra that if you vote for McCain you are voting for Bush and Rove. I wish he would give it a break. That rhetoric must be getting old even to his base by now. His base young old black brown or white, male or female are affected 100% by the high cost of gas. They along with every body else want to pay less for a gallon of gas. The Republicans are taking the initiative in actually trying to do something directly and immediate about that issue.
Speaking of new change. The actually doing something kind of Change. More news about the effect of Newt Gingrich’s “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” Petition and Campaign along with the current “guerilla war” in the House. It’s working. According to a Rasmussen poll. 67% of the people are in favor of offshore drilling. Barrack is definitely against that. The point here that shows the whole campaign started by Newt and picked up in practical terms first by Tim Walberg and the Discharge petition is getting enough recognition to warrant a national poll, and the poll backs up what we’re saying. The majority of all Americans are in favor of drilling. Newt calls that a tri partisan majority. A majority of Republicans, Democrats and Independents are in favor of drilling. Newt’s book “Real Change” has what he calls a platform for the American people which is made up of issues that all have a tri partisan majority. Plenty of ammunition the members of the House can use to keep the heat up on the Democrats.

While the article asks a valid point: whether or not Obama is naïve or not. To me that was not the instructive point in the article. I walked away from the piece with the opinion that Obama is indeed very adept at “politics as usual” He tried to turn the argument around to the same old same old mantra that if you vote for McCain you are voting for Bush and Rove. I wish he would give it a break. That rhetoric must be getting old even to his base by now. His base young old black brown or white, male or female are affected 100% by the high cost of gas. They along with every body else want to pay less for a gallon of gas. The Republicans are taking the initiative in actually trying to do something directly and immediate about that issue.

The House Republicans are starting to use an eminently conservative tactic, playing within the rules, a tactic that actually will call upon legislators to vote on an issue. Kind of using the law and Democracy for an in your face approach that I’m loving. Gee imagine forcing legislators to vote on something. Kind of a Put up or Shut up approach. As Newt would say either help us fix the problem or get out of the way. But I digress. Here is the strategy.

As Congressman Tim Walberg mentioned in his interview above that a discharge petition is a way to take a bill out of committee regardless of what the leadership thinks, the kicker is that it takes a majority of House members (218). Mr. Walberg explains how because of the need to vote some extra votes will happen to switch because some of the Congressmen don’t want to be seen as voting against the bill. Because this bill is about lowering gas prices and doing something immediately Walberg feels there is a chance. Whether or not it happens, I feel it is important to let the people know that the Republicans are fighting a good fight for them. And that they are getting back to their roots and the future will tell if they stick to their guns.
I had posted earlier about the Congress coming out with an action plan. At the time though I hoped for some action, I really didn’t expect anything much. I’m hoping this is the start of a concerted effort to hold the Democrat’s feet to the fire. Force some bipartisan efforts.

Really a groundswell going on here. Look back, how and who really got the ball rolling? Newt Gingrich whether you like him or not has done all the ground work on this one. He did the polling he found this issue because he listened. He has set things up nicely. He warned the Republicans about the coming disaster if they didn’t do anything. They didn’t so he did. His “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” petition is at 500, 000 signatures. And piling up as we speak. His site is Newt.org. Go there you will find a wealth of information about a lot of other issues that are equally resonant with the American people. Go to the link below to find out about the “Drill Here” effort. I’m a big fan of Newt and have been for a long time. I hope that Newt and Boehner are working together on this. There seems to be some energy coming out of the Republicans for a change. Young turks like Walberg from Michigan are being given their head and they are chomping at the bit.
Don’t know if it’s related but after Newt gave a warning to the leaders that some form of unity had to be achieved and quickly, then others came out with their warnings, Then May 20th the RSC came out with this plan of attack

Perhaps the new Turks of the Republican party can help move the party into it’s more traditional role of fighting big government and help make government more user friendly by following and holding leadership to the provisions in the plan above.
I’m looking forward to the election now with some more hope. It takes leadership to drive the car but in a democracy its the followers that sometimes tells the captain where they want him to drive the car too.

PPS. Just found this early this morning. Anti Fairness doctrine being pressed for a vote through, yup you guessed it a “discharge petition” The Republicans wrote a bill to get the “Fairness Doctrine” off the books and it was stuck in committee and forgotten about by the Democrat leaders. We are trying to get it out of committee through a discharge petition. 194 of the 218 signatures already obtained. If attained then there has to be a vote to pass the bill.
