Common Ground, Not Good Ground

I first got wind of Representative Dan Burton (R-IN), a Conservative leader in Congress, when I happened to see him on CSPan while channel surfing. He was with Tom Price and Lynn Westmoreland, standing alone on the floor of the US House. They were there after hours and by themselves just talking about the energy crisis and their new plans to try to get Congress to do something about all the energy bills that were stuck in committee. This was before the Republican leadership had picked up the lead on the energy questions. Before it was popular. I was impressed by his practical “get it done” attitude. I was impressed that here was a man willing to stand nearly alone for what he believed and try to create something.

I was more impressed that even then he was talking the idea of compromise and the need to get something done, and not just be another complainer. Recently he wrote an op ed piece for the Washington Times linked below.
-----Dan’s Op ed------
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/17/americas-energy-future-63907242/
----------------------
Throughout the piece Mr. Burton talks of compromise as being necessary. The entire slant of the article is about the need of Congress to become non partisan on our energy policy. He talks of putting together a bill that is not perfect for Republicans and not perfect for Democrats; but right for America. His plan is simple and full of common sense. Dan again stands nearly alone using the seldom heard word “compromise” on Capital Hill. Though seldom heard it is all the more appreciated by this blogger especially as I pull out of the gas station with an empty wallet. This “Energy Crisis” has hit me hard enough to question my steadfast loyalty to my own principles. Where am I willing to compromise to find common ground. Something needs to actually get done in Congress. Where does one draw the line between necessary compromise and stubborn (ego driven??) adherence to principle. I really don’t know, but that is the nature of compromise. I have to learn to work with those that differ widely with my beliefs. That is the hard part of finding common ground.

I applaud Dan for his concise and logical editorial about what needs to be done and how to do it.
I also applaud his willingness to compromise his ideas for the good of the country. I will applaud any others who do the same. I know that he is not “caving in” on his beliefs, to curry favor with the other side. He is simply trying to find middle ground so the group of our elected Representatives can try to get something constructive done. There is an old saying that “compromise is best reached at the point of the gun”. The Framers of our “Declaration of Independence and later of our Constitution fully understood that saying in real terms. They had very divergent views of the world and how it should be governed. Yet they were able to compromise enough to find some common ground in order to secure their survival.

As we have been recently reminded, this country, along with the rest of the world is dependent upon oil to the extent that our very lives and well being hinge upon an unbroken supply. Our survival, our way of life, has become overly dependent upon that supply. We the people are getting upset that nothing is being done to solve the problem. First there was Newt (a private citizen) funneling this desire into the workable and understandable “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” petition and media blitz. Then some like Mr. Burton started to spread that message. Now the leaders have started to pick up the ball. The President also. Even the candidates are paying lip service to it. All the polls continue to show that the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents favor more exploration and finding more supply as the first step in solving our energy needs. Compromise is the key to this Congress getting something done. I feel it necessary that I support the idea of compromise. I will always believe in my core beliefs but I will also be looking for the common ground necessary to actually get something done.

It would not be unworthy of your time to check out other remarks by Dan Burton on his blog

PS As our Party celebrates Abraham Lincoln, it may be constructive to remember the bloody results caused by the unwillingness to compromise on our individual values. Both sides during Lincoln’s time were unable to find common ground upon which to agree, and we were left to find “good ground” from which we could kill as many fellow Americans as we could in the Civil War.

Update on the “Drill Here” Energy idea. + The “Energy Freedom March”

Update on the “Drill Here” Energy idea. + The “Energy Freedom March”

I admit to being angry that Congress will not allow more exploration of energy sources. I’m fed up with Congress seemingly waiting for some :pie in the sky” scientific breakthrough in the energy field maybe a “perpetual motion” machine. I’ve had enough of big talk and no action. I don’t want to wait another 20 years for the perfect solution. I want something done by Congress now.

Gee is it so complicated. The price of oil is shooting up for lack of it. Hey here is a novel idea. Let’s look for some more. Let’s take advantage of what we have; coal, oil shale, nuclear. Let’s concentrate on bringing the price of oil down. At the same time we can put money into coming up with other alternative forms of energy, wind solar bio and any other newer means. But first let us become free from the rising cost of oil. That alone can have a snowball effect upon becoming free from foreign dependence on oil and lead to freedom from oil altogether at least for energy.

Like a war, we need to see some progress. We need to win one skirmish then one battle. The plan will change once the war starts, it has to adapt to changing circumstances: but we need a plan. Then each bill we pass will move us towards victory over Dependence on Foreign Oil. To be non-partisan, we need a plan for the good of America to point to with pride to overcome the naysayer’s .

Below are some links to update what some of the Leaders in this battle in Congress are doing to try to change things. Below those links, see what we’re doing about it right here in Muskegon.

American Solutions, (the people who came up with Drill here, Drill now, Pay Less) The video is a shorter version of the presentation to the leaders of Congress 1.3 million signatures on the “Drill Here” Petition. This will be sent to all the leaders. Hopefully this 1.3 will grow to a goal of 3 million signatures, which will be presented to the Republican and Democratic Conventions.

John Boehner, (Republican Leader in the House) has the following links. He has become the focal point of this process. Constantly bring heat to the majority through a lot of different ways. His current effort is a 10 House member tour of Energy sources in the country. His way of showing that we have the where with all to do great things towards the goal of energy independence. His group of energy bills is called “All of the Above”. It includes not only exploration, but conservation and promotion of alternative energy sources. His current tour emphasizes this.

Yes we are a Can Do Nation. Even if Congress has been a “Do Nothing Congress”.

On the right side of the above link be sure to click on the blog button. This has the full acceptance of the 1.3 million signatures, plus other links to his efforts.

Dan Burton the conservative leader in the House has as is usual been leading his own battle to help goad Congress into action and stir up some publicity. He and Mike Pence and Steve Buyer are holding a Press Conference this Monday 7/21 to spread the word. Show an Indiana united front. Below is a link to his efforts.

--------------

Next the guy that started the Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” slogan Newt Gingrich has broadened the theme by changing the name to “Do it All, Do it Now, Do it For America” He hopes to gather another 1.7 million signatures to go with the 1.3 to total 3 million to present to both political conventions. Below is his site. Click on Rosy the Riveter to see the scope of his solution to the Energy problem. Click on the upper right Drill Petition to see the current total.

--------------

Last but not least Tim Walberg (Michigan’s own) sponsored the first discharge petitions in the House to try to force the “no more excuses energy bill” out of committee where it along with other energy bill are stuck, onto the floor for a yes or no vote. Below is his latest volley.

--------------

There are many others, google away, and you will see.

Myself and some others have decided that we also want to not only give our support to this effort but to actually play a small part in this effort, to spur congress on to “Do Something” to help our country to become more Energy Independent.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tuesday, July 22nd we are holding an “Energy Freedom March” on the sidewalk of the County building. Starting around 8:30 am. I'll be there all day. Feel free to stop any time for any amout of time. Sign our petition for "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" or not. Pick up a sign or bring your own or not. Bring a friend or not. This is a "bottom up type of thing". I’m making twenty signs to carry. Simple messages, Drill Now, Stop Opec. America / Has Had Enough, Drill Here, We Want A / Do Something Congress. Honk For Lower / Gas Prices.

If you want to help out or find out anything at all about this, below are my contact #s

"ENERGY FREEDOM MARCH" UPDATE

This idea of mine to have a “ENERGY FREEDOM MARCH” (how do you like the new name?) about “DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, PAY LESS” is a way for me to try to show support for those in Congress who are trying to do just that. I feel that they are trying to buck the system. They could use some of our support. I hope this March will show some local support for the idea of expanded drilling. For the idea that the sooner we start drilling the sooner we will start to drive down the price. We need a break. We need to send a clear message to those raising the price (speculators and OPEC etc.) that we have had enough.

My idea of this effort is not to gather an army. I’m talking a few people (4-5) at the core to keep it going for one day, 10 people would be great. Then hopefully people driving by will get interested. I hope to have fliers to hand out that will inform them of what we are doing and why; but also telling them that we hope to have a rally the next day with more people and that it will be made known to the media. This Rally will happen only if enough people show some interest. If we have too small a turnout on Tuesday and few show interest for the next day's rally there will not be one.

What I want to see is a lot of others simply stopping by for an hour or so, picking up a sign and joining in with us. Anonymously is great. I will try to get some signs made up in advance, but as I say later a home made sign is as good or better. But either way is good. Remember the signs need to be read from the street. The sign big enough, but not so big so you can't carry it, the wording short, the letters HUGE. Example. DRILL NOW, FREEDOM/OPEC, ENERGY FREEDOM, HONK FOR/CHEAPER GAS, CONGRESS/DO SOMETHING. The / means the first part on top of the second part, allowing the letters to be bigger. If you are into graphics and want to help let me know. Time is short.

The overall goal is to put some local pressure on Congress to do something about our energy problems. Put that pressure on before they leave for their recess. We need to get something positive done NOW

By the Way. This is all legal, as long as we stay on the sidewalk. No one even needs to know your name. Or you can proudly exclaim it.

I do not want this to be a political party type of thing. This has to do with creating more American made energy here and now. Forcing us to become energy independent. Stopping us from having to give billions of our money to other countries many of whom dislike us and some of whom are our enemy. See my previous post showing the pew poll and how this idea has crossed party lines and has become an American idea. I’m just trying to provide a way for us citizens to voice our opinion in a way that could send a message to our legislators, who seem way too political right now.

While I admit to the part my ego plays in this, I have nothing to gain in any financial sense. Nor am I trying to gain recognition to gain something other than I believe in America as a Can Do type of Nation. If I can help us in any way to Become That again, then I would feel proud of that. That would carry my pride for a long time. Lol I hope others are also willing to that and for the same pay.

As I've said I'll have some signs, but feel free to make your own signs. Small enough to carry, with wording large enough to see from the street. This is meant to be a Grass Roots Apolitical “Action March”. A home made DRILL NOW sign in my opinion shows more heart than a pre made one. More Bottom Up if you will. Let’s try to keep the hate and politics out of this.

Again July 22nd from 9am - 5pm.

Well got to get to work. All my contact #s etc are below. Feel free to call. Or write or comment.

"DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW, PAY LESS" ACTION MARCH

Below is the first draft of what I'm planning to do. It seemed a Bottom Up kind of thing to do. I've talked to a few people already and they seem interested. I want ideas. I'll listen to any critiques of the (PR?). I would like to see other cities try it if this works. It might as well start right here right now in Muskegon. To paraphrase an old politician. A little protest in this city; a little protest in that city; pretty soon you're talking a protest people will hear.
I sent the previous version of this to Nick at Right Michigan for help. Also to Tim Walberg, Dan Burton, and John Boehner. I realize they won't be the ones reading it. But I've talked to people in their staff previously and they liked the rough idea. I hope they will help with the pr and organization etc. It may be wishfull thinking but you never know
=============================================================
To whom it may concern.

My name is Bob Carr. I’m a citizen concerned with the price of gasoline. I am also concerned with the seeming inability of the Congress to do something about it. A recent pew pole showed an upsurge in support for a more direct approach to solving that problem, The poll question asked the person to chose between, more exploration, mining etc. vs. increasing regulation on the oil companies, and or conservation. The surprising thing was that the largest increase came from the young people, the college educated, the women, the liberals. A larger percentage of self proclaimed Democrats are in favor of increased exploration, than the percentage of self proclaimed Republicans. All of this change was done in 4 months since Newt Gingrich got the ball rolling with the “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” petition. He has over 1 -1/3 million signatures.
-----link to pew poll-------
http://people-press.org/report/433/gas-prices
--------------------------------
The third box of numbers was shocking to me. This is not a political issue anymore to the people of the country, only to the legislators. I am having this protest march to put a face on the anger the people have with the leadership in Congress.

John Boehner on July 11th released the following. I blogged about it at
-----my blog-----
http://conservativeinmuskegon.blogspot.com/2008/07/i-dream-of-campout.html
--------------------
“I especially liked the fire in the belly as evidenced by the following quote from Mr. Boehner. ““I’m going to say it one more time, we need to do ‘all of the above’ if we’re serious. We can drill in an environmentally sound way, and that’s what we should be doing… We’re not going to leave here for the August recess until we get a vote on having more American-made energy.””.
---------------
I have decided that I too am going to do something about the lack of action from Congress. Below is what I came up with.

On July 23, starting at 9:00 am and hopefully lasting all day I and others will be marching and carrying signs in front of the Muskegon County Building. If this is successful and a lot of people show up or promise to the next day, we will follow up on the 24th. I will then be notifying all media of this. Again if this is received well, I would hope other cities might catch wind of it.

I have been in contact with the offices of Dan Burton and Tim Walberg and John Boehner, they all were positive. Tim and Dan have been the pioneers in the Congress on this issue, along with others including Lynn Westmoreland, and Tom Price. John Boehner has taken the leader ship position as he should in the House. The President has finally joined by lifting the ban on off shore drilling.

It is now up to Congress. I’m organizing this “March” to let the people of Muskegon show their views on this issue. Something needs to be done by Congress, before it recesses to help restore the people’s faith in that body. Letting people know that they can be a “Can Do Congress” instead of a “Do Nothing Congress”. This "Action March" is not a march so much as a few people holding signs and hopeing others will join in. I am not affiliated with any goup, I just want to do what I feel needs doing.

Thank You.

I Dream of a Campout.

Still hope for action.

---------------
With the clout of the President and the previously mentioned momentum based on overwhelming public opinion, I still have hope that this “do nothing Congress” may yet surprise us. I’ve blogged about how a bottom up movement has kept growing and bubbled up through the system. Republican leaders got on board in the House and Senate, then McCain and Bush are finally joining too. If McCain could just gather all the threads, it would be a chance to prove his abilities and leadership. His experience with working with other leaders could be highlighted. We’ll see. We’ve always at the last moment been able to turn back the naysayer’s. Just maybe this can be the tie breaker. The President did say. “He said Congress must address this issue before it goes home.” Perhaps The President read John Boehner’s alert below.

Yesterday John Boehner sent out this alert on his web site.

I especially liked the fire in the belly as evidenced by the following quote from Mr. Boehner. ““I’m going to say it one more time, we need to do ‘all of the above’ if we’re serious. We can drill in an environmentally sound way, and that’s what we should be doing… We’re not going to leave here for the August recess until we get a vote on having more American-made energy.””.

Wouldn’t it not be something to see 150-200 members of Congress camped out in the House. The President and or McCain bringing food to them. People starting to gather around and bringing their own lunches. I’d organize a busload from Muskegon Michigan. Believe me I’m serious. If I see Boehner actually “camp out” in the House. I’ll get that busloaded. Can you see the signs?? “DRILL NOW, WHILE CONGRESS HIDES”.. “STICK THIS DRILL UP IRAN’S”.. “GO AHEAD WAKE UP THIS SLEEPING GIANT” “LET’S BANKRUPT OPEC” What a thing this could be. Plus meeting or seeing some of the people who started this out. Like Newt (he for sure would be there), and Dan Burton and Tim Walberg. Oh what larks that could be. Remember Bobby Jindal?? He called the Louisiana legislature back in session twice as a rookie governor. What does Bush have to lose. I don’t want just a bite out of that whole enchilada. Just IMAGINE.

I’m willing if Boehner gives us a sign. I’m sure others in the blogoshere would join with the organizing of a bottom up effort. The kind of decentralized type of thing to create our own mini Woodstock. A conservative Woodstock.Lol. Talk about what goes around comes around. We’ll hope, we’ll see.

Maybe the President read it I don’t know, hopefully McCain did. We the people are starting to. The news is getting out, now the bully pulpit of the Presidency is added. If nothing else the extra publicity will help. It is the job of our elected representatives to represent the will of their constituents. That PEW poll showed what that was without a doubt. Nice to see them doing that, standing up for us that is.

John Boehner is starting an “American Energy Tour”
-----link-----
http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=96880
--------------
Here are the 10 members going with him. We should be hearing more of this later. Maybe they could be the nucleus of campers. Maybe he could talk them into it.
-----list-----
NOTE: Boehner will be joined on the American Energy Tour by Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Mary Fallin (R-OK), Dean Heller (R-NV), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Robert Latta (R-OH), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Adrian Smith (R-NE).
-------------
Whatever happens I salute their efforts. John Boehner has stepped up as the leader in this. Anyone else think this is possible?

If you think this a fantasy, It may be, but I’d rather live by a positive “can do” fantasy than the negative “can’t do anything” fantasy we’re surrounded by today.

Pass It Now, Pass It As It Is, Compromise Later

Again I can’t help but like Tim Walberg’s leadership on the energy issue, below is from yesterday.
-----Tim’s Bolg------
http://walberg.house.gov/Blog/
---------------------
The no more excuses legislation was what I’ve called the first volley in the House battle over energy. There is a “discharge petition” in the House to force this energy bill out of committee and onto the House floor for an actual vote. Needs 218 votes, Tim has come up with 153 so far. This will probably not come about because the “Big Shots” are negotiating now. Harry Reid the head obstacle is even sounding like he is feeling the heat and may be open to compromise. Other Democrats are caving in by varying degrees.

Below is a link from Politico I lifted.
-----link------
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/11649.html
----------------
The Democrats are trying to stall as always, stick their heads in the sand, blame it on somebody else. It’s not their fault, they’re only the majority party in control of the House and Senate. What do the people expect them to do. --- Something??

Catskill (D-MO) and Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill) are harping back to the idea that the oil companies should drill on the land they already have leased that they can’t find oil on, before they consider other places. Like it really matters where it comes from.
I quote him from the article. “Beyond that, if there is a suggestion of some new area to go into, I’ll look at it.” Boy that is really big of him. Hope he can find the time in between fund raisers at Greenpeace and the Sierra Club. How condescending can you get. This sure is the party of Change. Well maybe Change any real Change into the same old same old.

Again I quote the article from a Greenpeace spokesman.
-----quote-----
“The bottom line is, politicians who are trying to sell offshore drilling as a quick fix are not looking at the core of the problem — years of failed energy policy,” said Greenpeace senior legislative coordinator Kate Smolski.
-----------------
He obviously fails to comprehend that the “years of failed energy policy” are the fault of groups like his in their self righteous closed mindedness to compromise. Their fanaticism. Well the people do and they are being forced to become a little fanatic in return and as they start stretching their muscles the public is remembering how nice that brand of freedom feels.

Now it is up to the Republican leaders in the House and Senate. If they could both come together and unite they would have the power needed. What I don’t want to see is this energy bill get watered down. A little here and a little there and we will no doubt fulfill the Democrat prophesy of little change at the pump. The country needs a complete energy effort as Tim Walberg alluded to. An all out effort like the Manhattan project or the Man on the Moon effort.

In my opinion the Republicans are in the right place at the right time to force an energy independence type of bill through. They have to hold their hand and not give in and keep putting the Democrats feet to the fire. It would be nice to see McCain really get behind this. But either way the voters are definitely behind it. All I can say to Boehner and McConnell is: Fight Like Your Country’s Life Depends On It. Because it does.

CAN DO AMERICANS

“CAN DO AMERICA”

The idea of a “Can Do America” vs. a “do nothing America” from a “do nothing Congress” to a “fix it now Congress” is starting to take hold. From a groundswell of the people, first brought to my attention by Newt Gingrich then some congressmen started seeing the same need to do something and struck out nearly alone. I’ve posted before in my “guerilla war” posts about these individuals. I don’t know them personally but I know the feeling that drives them. I’m picking it up by the handfuls where ever and whenever I find it, from The People. It’s that “Can Do” positive attitude. It’s the inspiration that let’s three congressmen stand alone on the House floor after hours and try to start a conversation about doing something about the rising fuel costs. They were Lynn Westmoreland, Tom Price and a conservative leader in the House, Dan Burton. Their struggle was then picked up by the Republican leadership in the House and Senate, namely John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell. The people have finally gotten through to Washington. It was a Republican message a Republican bottom up effort. Now I see the Democrats trying to make it look like they had wanted to drill all along. Somehow it was probably Bush’s fault and the minority party in Congress that stopped them. I think "The People" have had enough of that story. I think they are liking the new "common sense" story they are hearing from the Republicans better.

Our Leadership will be hard pressed to come up with a compromise solution that keeps the "common sense" approach yet still actually produce a bill that increases supply. That seems to be the core Conservative approach that shouldn’t be compromised. Increase production. I just saw Dan Burton’s latest statement on his site, I’ve linked it below. As one of the “guerilla” leaders initially he sums up the whole matter pretty succinctly. My “common sense leadership award” goes to him today.
-----link-----
http://www.danburtonblog.com/
---------------
Let me here restate my thanks to all the leadership for taking the lead so effectively. John Boehner the Leader of the House Republicans is charging full speed ahead. Everyday he is firing from the front lines. He walked out of the Country Club picked up a bayonet and is putting himself out there. He is building it I hope the rest of us will come. The least we can do is to watch his back. Look again at his web site. He is daily coming up with new ideas, keeping the Democrats off balance. He’s now is organizing a tour to help dramatize and publicize the fact that we really can do “all of the above” in regards to becoming energy independent. He is taking the lead showing that Conservative solutions work. The more support we can give him and Mitch McConnell in the Senate, the better compromise we will end up with.

For those of my brethren who complain that John McCain isn't following suit and isn't running a big ad campaign about this. Think of what "bottom up" means. First we had the people complaining about the rising cost of gas. Then a private citizen and a few members of the house and senate, now the leadership has joined. I too hope John McCain will follow, we can sure use his help and he sure could use ours: but this is too big a message to be stopped by one person.

Let’s not bitch later over what we didn’t get, but let us fight now for what we can get. That will also show those who have fought the long fight in the wilderness that it was not in vain. I don’t pretend to know all of the unsung heroes, I just will mention some I’ve found more in the public eye such a Newt Gingrich, Dan Burton, Tom Price, Lynn Westmoreland, and Tim Walberg.
I’ve emailed and talked with them. I want to let them know that they have a following that they have at least my support. Let’s face it I like a pat on the back. They’re human, I want to thank them for going the extra mile.

In my side bar under “Old Standby Links” I have links to all I’ve mentioned. I’ll list them here. All the sites have contact buttons. Push one. lol

"The Grand New Party"

In my previous post I quoted the governor of Minnesota John Pawlenty about how he thought the Republicans need to merge the “Country Club with the Sam’s Club crowd.” I liked that phrase so much I googled it.

Below is a link to an article by David Brooks. One of my favorite writers.
-----link-----
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/27/opinion/27brooks.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
---------------
This guy is singing my tune. It’s nice to see I’m not alone in thinking that there is something wrong with the Republican Party. In the path it has chosen. I have previously blogged about him and the idea of a new path for The Republican party. In the article above Mr. Brooks highlights a collaborative effort by two younger writers who wrote the book “Grand New Party: How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream.” The two young writers are Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam. David Brooks writes about the motivation for that book comes from the Pawlenty quote. The internet does indeed make the world smaller.
Below is a quote from David’s article that I couldn’t pass by.
-----quote-----
“What all these ideas, from the sober to the speculative, have in common is a vision of working-class independence — from bosses, from bureaucracy, from entrenched interests of all kinds,” Douthat and Salam write. This is not compassionate conservatism (which flattered the mind of the compassionate donor), it’s hard-work conservatism, which uses government to increase the odds that self-discipline and effort will pay off.
---------------
How cool is that. Using the government to “facilitate” the success of conservative principles like hard work self-discipline. The key that will make it work is found in the simple notion of Freedom. Douthat and Salam talked of freedom from bosses bureaucracy and entrenched interests of all kinds. I would include unions in that. As in my previous blog I talked of the enhanced freedom the internet is bringing to it’s users. That the internet can be the tool that allows people to become free of those bosses among others. We need not use the libertarian idea that government is bad. Tear it down. Let’s be more Reagan like. Let us introduce conservative solutions and let them work their magic. Let’s work with what we have (make do, make it now, make it work). Changes as to governments size and scope will be a natural reaction to our conservative ideas. The people will begin to demand those changes as they get a taste of that freedom. Much as I blogged about the youth taking for granted the new freedoms of the internet and how they would fight any changes to that freedom. That’s the kind of conservative working class ethic I’m pushing. The British Conservatives have done just that. Overcoming the inertia of the Country Club crowd will be the trick. This will have to be a revolution from the “bottom up” as a friend of mine says, a battle of David’s. The outcome will take time and hinge upon the number of David’s willing to come forward to lead.

The recent pew poll shows our dilemma. The number one issue we as Republicans have is the price of gasoline, our conservative common sense answer to that is to produce more oil as we push for alternatives. The poll showed the vast majority (over 80%) in favor of drilling vs. using a redistribution of wealth (taxes and regulation) to get out of the problem. While all the “guerilla” efforts by the Republican’s including Newt Gingrich’s “Drill Here” petition have changed the majority view about drilling the one group that actually showed declining support for drilling was the Republican. The groups that one thinks of as the Democrat base, (young, college, women) all increased their support of drilling by double digits, some in the 20’s. The Republicans actually showed a decline.

What is wrong here? Are we just too old to change our minds? Are our synapses too fried? Perhaps we think it’s a conspiracy by the left to trick us. We’ve been tricked in the past. Is it our distrust of the leadership and or of government in general. Maybe we just like being in the minority. It allows us to bitch without worrying about the consequences. What ever it is, it seems to be based in the negative. Our guerilla war is based in the positive. It is working. Ronald Reagan was based in the positive, his ideas worked. My simple conclusion is that our leaders need to become more positive more of a can do type of leadership, our party needs to be the vehicle of change for the better. I’ve also blogged in the past the idea that sometimes a person just has to strike out on their own, use God’s gifts and come up with their own ideas. I’ve been trying to do just that, build my own idea of what the party should be and see if anyone will agree. See if I can fit my ideas into what some others think. David Brooks and I hope the authors of “The Grand New Party” are forming a nucleus into which I can fit my ideas. That book is going on my reading list. Well I’m through for now, off to Amazon on line (Ain’t the internet cool?) then off to work. (Ain’t bosses a bitch) lol.

Too much going on in my fantasy. Here is some more guerilla stuff.

Below is a link to what Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell put in a press release on the 7th. The Senate was on CSPAN yesterday. The Dems all of a sudden are all for drilling etc. Gee maybe they saw the pew poll above. Lol. Both our leaders in the House and Senate are on board with this “little” guerilla war. Now if we can keep to our conservative ideas and compromise only on the mechanics, we will have won a battle. Our first battle that we can build upon. Build a coalition on. Now if we can keep ourselves out of the way, we have a chance. Talk to your republican friends about getting behind this effort. The Democrats are more than willing to take this issue away too in their election day rush to the middle.

The fireworks will soon be happening. John Boehner our leader in the House will be firing on all cylinders today as the House opens back up for business. Call your Congressmen. Email them talk to their wives. Well maybe not that. Lol. What the heck why not if you can.
Mitch McConnell in the Senate has already begun as the Senate was in session yesterday. I would also tune into CSPAN and see if we can boost their ratings which would send a message also. Again talk to your republican friends. I know a bunch that will be saying that this is too little too late, that this will not help. Remind them that Ron Reagan was known not for his pessimistic attitude. Point out the “can do” optimism in the above quotes. Show how the negativism of the Dems is front and center and should be attacked and exposed.

SPLASH AND DASH

Splash and Dash.

Another concrete specific Republican proposal to do something about the Energy Problem. There is a problem, a loophole in the bio-diesel subsidy recently enacted. The catch phrase explaining it “Splash and Dash” I saw it last night on FOX. I found the link below this morning.
-----link-----
http://johnshadegg.house.gov/Multimedia/?MediaID=212
---------------
Another “common sense” piece of legislation put on the House floor by a Republican. Something concrete to fix a relatively small problem. The scam is obvious, the fix is simple if the Republicans back it 100% the Dems will look pretty “same old, same old” or dare I say anti-change. Maybe this will be the log jam breaker to start building a coalition with some of the Democrats for the good of the country. For common sense for the idea of Make Do, Make It Now, Make It Work. Or doing something constructive to lower the costs, while we wait for the democrats to invent the free energy machine. I call it good stewardship of the peoples money.

If you’ll remember John Shadegg (R Az) and Tom Colburn introduced an Enumerated Powers Act . A snippet I found explains that act,
-----snippet-----
Many in Congress have forgotten the words of Thomas Jefferson -- that "Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated." Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) haven’t forgotten, judging by their “Enumerated Powers Act.” Under it, all bills introduced would have to contain “a concise and definite statement” citing the specific provision in the constitution as authority for a bill. If there is no specific authority for a new “Bridge to Nowhere,” for an earmark to improve the shelf life of vegetables, or to federally fund Planned Parenthood, then a member of the House or Senate can raise a point of order against the legislation.
-----------------
I showed that snippet to show where Shadegg is coming from. He is one of the few Republicans who have been beating the drum for awhile now. Let’s get behind them on the Energy thing. John Shadegg has chosen not to run again this year. That is too bad. Hope we can find a good replacement. There are so many ways to fix the government. One piece at a time.

The whole concept of Transparency in government across the board as a major issue can be highlighted by specific solutions as advocated by Dan Burton in health care.

Maybe this scam is obnoxious enough that Republicans and Democrats both will stand up to the special interests on this one. It would be nice to see the Do nothing Congress become a Get it Done Congress. A Congress that gets things done with up and down votes in a transparent manner for all to see. Not with some earmark or amendment to an omnibus bill at the last minute. Younger voters are demanding as their unalienable right the ability to get the information they want when they want it. They will demand to know the facts before they make up their minds. They want truth and transparency. No more politics as usual. What they don’t want is the usual dance around the issues at election time. I think they are getting a glimpse of Bill Clinton, or George Bush in Barrack Obama’s new push to the center.

That recent Pew poll showed that the group with the largest change in favor of drilling was in the young voters. This group is fiscally conservative as far as what the government does with tax money. Republicans locally have a real chance here. In order to take advantage, I think the local parties have to start making changes that open themselves up to volunteers and new ideas, The Internet for one. Just plain friendliness for another, and lay off the condescension. Please.

Something Happening Here, What It Is Ain't Exactly Clear.

Our little “guerilla war” is turning into a full blown battle. What started with the Guerilla tactics out of the view of the mainstream media by the likes of Newt Gingrich’s Drill Here Drill Now Pay Less Petition drive to Lynn Westmoreland, Tom Price, and Dan Burton standing in the well of the House talking to a small CSPAN audience after hours and introducing what I called a “by the door Petition“ about increasing oil production for the legislators to see and hopefully sign on their way into the chamber. To Michigan’s Tim Walberg’s “Discharge Petition”. Then finally to the Republican Leadership of the house and Senate taking notice and getting behind the troops. The seed had been planted. The American public is changing their minds with this constant drumbeat that is beginning to be picked up by the Media. I give Kudos in this blog today to John Boehner, the Republican House leader.

The more I follow John Boehner’s web site, the more I realize that he is on top of things, he is taking the lead in this battle as he should. He is really putting the Democrat’s feet to the fire over drilling for oil. Below is his excellent article from 7/3/08. He has been posting everyday. Congress may be on vacation but he is still posting on the net. John Boehner has been working over time.
-----link-----
http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=96338
---------------
In the article he mentions the latest PEW poll and the effect it should have on the average Democratic members who are up for election in November. The link to the PEW poll is below. As I studied it I was amazed. This poll should be devastating to the Democratic middle.
-----link-----
http://people-press.org/report/433/gas-prices
---------------
This poll gives proof that within 4 months the American public has been changing their minds about drilling (exploration) all across the board. The most amazing thing was that the Democratic base showed the highest percentage of change for all the groups. Here I’m talking about the following groups, all double digit change in favor of drilling vs. conserving our way out of the problem: Young voters, college students, women of all ages and those calling themselves liberals. I’m talking up to 20^% change of attitude towards drilling. The findings are indeed amazing. Almost the entire Democratic base has changed their minds. Dan Burton highlighted a blog of mine in the past and his joy that someone had noticed what he Price and Westmoreland were doing seemingly alone. The battle they were fighting against hopeless odds. Well it seems that I wasn’t the only one listening, and the PEW poll shows that the odds are piling up in their favor.

While I’m praising the Wayward Son, those who know the bible will understand my deep undying gratitude and respect for those who put it all out there with little chance of success and got the ball rolling. That ball seems to have taken on a life of it’s own. This is what I keep referring to as “Bottom Up Politics” after the British model. Take what we have to work with, to put forward a Conservative based solution to a problem. Put it into practice to prove that our ideas work. This whole idea of drilling, simply fit’s a conservative mantra of supply and demand. We have a chance to prove that this mantra works.

Our National leaders have a chance to get behind this and expand it and increase it’s scope to include a “Manhattan Like Project” for energy independence, A Kennedy like effort to be energy independent by 2015. Don’t be afraid of the Kennedy thing, use it to find the common ground for solutions that work. We as conservatives want things to work we should be willing to share the praise for doing so. We know the Congress has been a do nothing Congress on both sides and the people have had enough. We as Republicans have a chance show how all members can be a part of a “Get it Done” Congress. Help restore the peoples faith in their institutions. I’m sure there are many on either side of the aisle that would welcome that title and respect.

Regards, Live Dangerously Be A Conservative
PS AN OH MY GOD LOOK WHAT I SAW MOMENT. The only thing we have to fear is ourselves.

A word of caution upon re studying the PEW poll. Those calling themselves conservatives showed no change holding at only 47%, those people over 65 showed a decline of 2% in favor of increased exploration, mining drilling and new power plants. The most scary was that among Republicans, Democrats, and Independents; Republicans only showed a decline and it was 6% bringing them and became the group most against trying to increase production. MAN OHOOO MAN OOOOH MAN. What the Heck is the deal?? Are the Country Club Republicans going to take this gift and ruin it again as they have in the past? Are we going to let the Democrats slither their way into leading and taking charge of this popular movement? This movement that we created? Our one good chance. Please what can I do about it? Are we so conditioned to the beating the Radical Environmentalist have given us over the years that in our misguided quest to get along at the Club, we have lost our will to fight?? If we do lose this issue, that’s it. The guerilla war will just have to start from the bottom up and find it’s own leaders. Again Thank God for the Wayward sons. Thank God for the Guerillas and Thank you John Boehner. Let’s hope that the others will get off their high horse of charts graphs and market analysis long enough to see the forest through the trees. Either that or get the hell out of the way.

Warmest regards to some.

VIGILANCE

Below is a link to an article by Kathryn Jean Lopez in the National Review.
-----link-----
http://www.rightmichigan.com/story/2008/6/28/73437/7269
--------------
She talks about a new conservative revolution. About how conservative core ideas still resonate with the general public. Her article was about McClintock and California. Yesterday I posted the following about a new Gallop Poll, covering the whole country.
-----quote from my previous article--------------------------------------------------------
New Gallop Pole. A shocker to me, at least in one aspect.
-----link-----
http://www.gallup.com/poll/108445/Americans-Oppose-Income-Redistribution-Fix-Economy.aspx
---------------
The aspect I was stunned by was the following I lifted directly from the above article.
-----quote-----
PRINCETON, NJ -- When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today's consumer, Americans overwhelmingly -- by 84% to 13% --prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From that quote I drew the obvious conclusion that 84% of Americans realize that redistributing wealth doesn’t fix the underlying problems with the economy and jobs. I further concluded that the public knows those liberal programs have not worked in the past. I agree that conservative ideas such as less government intrusion is still an issue that will garner votes.

I see in the Lopez article about McClintock and his run in the primary and subsequent nomination as a microcosm for the hope and a guide for a conservative rebirth. As she alludes to, this may not happen over night, but it will happen. I liked the article in that it showed the dilemma Republicans as a party find themselves in after breaking faith with the public and their own promises as conservatives. McClintock symbolizes a conservative making the same promises of the Reagan era and getting elected.

While I agree that Conservatives have to stick to the basics, because that is what the people believe. I go a step further and as you know if you’ve read my other posts, I continually push for concrete specific actions. Lead by example not only word. Don’t just back a good sounding conservative bill. Then sit back and say see I fought the good fight. Stay in there and fight tooth and nail. Don’t compromise on principle, get a part of the bill you like enacted. Show that the conservative message has teeth and can work if given a chance. Fight to show your ideas are workable. Earn that trust back.

I also make one other suggestion. Get the grass roots involved, we can rally around any big league leaders that happen along, but the real work needs to be done at the local level. We need to get people talking about conservative solutions to problems within our local schools, local governments. Back the local conservatives who seem true to the core conservative ideas. I’m not talking about ideologues spouting invective larceny about how terrible liberals are, you know those a mile away, everybody else shuns them. Maybe we should too. I’m talking about the ones that make a reasoned workable suggestion at a city or a county or a local school board meeting.

I’ll back the person who suggests that perhaps the private sector could do some things the government does only better and save us money. At the same time I want to see that person willing to fight to actually take that savings out of the income stream of government. Not let it be put back into it. I like the way David Cameron of the new Conservative Party in England talks of “no unfunded tax cuts” and "sharing the proceeds of growth between public services and lower taxes" As a conservative I’m backing saving money in government then actually taking that income stream (taxes in one form or other) out of play. Once we turn the service over, take the money we saved actually out of government. Without doing that the government only continues to grows. By doing that the government becomes smaller and less intrusive.

Hopefully Phil Gramm is pounding that basic conservative idea into John McCain’s brain and we can have some direction from above. Maybe, but I think this really has to come from the bottom up. Thomas Jefferson said back in the day: “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”. I think Jefferson was thinking more of the individual citizen than the legislator in congress. We the Citizen are the ones who have to be vigilant. Vigilant enough so our legislators are wary.

Shock Gallop Poll

----------------
What struck me was the above numbers when compared to the reasonably close numbers in the rest of the article. The rest of the numbers seemed to follow accepted differences between the parties. So what was the difference of the first set of numbers. Why did all parties and all income brackets favor the first .

It seems apparent to me that the survey reflected the idea people have which favors doing something about the cause of the problems, and that they thought that redistributing the wealth doesn’t do anything about the root cause. Again the quote
-----quote-----
Prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.
-----------------
The American people want things done to fix the problems we face and they overwhelmingly seem to be saying that taxing the people with money more will not do it. Rather they want the government to focus on the problems and fix them.

The other questions fall back to normal predictable results. Those questions deal with whether the government should do more or less to help, vs. letting the individual do more to help themselves.

My take on this is that the People want solutions that are directly tied to the fixing of the problem in a concrete way. The article seemed to think the recent stimulus cash advance was popular on both sides of the aisle. I’m stipulating that, but also point out that the people with whom this was so popular was the Legislators, not necessarily the people. Have you seen the popularity or lack thereof the Legislators have with the public. The popularity the stimulus package had with the legislators as I see it comes from offering them a chance to legally buy votes. I would agree that choice was probably popular with those doing the buying. The question is, does the majority of Americans think that practice is the best way of fixing the problem??

The citizens took the money, why not? I ask what concrete choice did the people have. Is there a way to change the choices out there? You bet. This recent push across the board by the Republicans on Energy is putting a choice out there that the American people are overwhelmingly in favor of. A choice that does something concrete about the oil shortage which is driving up the cost at the pump. The “All of the Above” energy plan of the Republicans is offering a choice. (Finally). Maybe this gallop poll will help to turn some Democrats facing close elections to swing in favor of more drilling as a more realistic way of increasing production than taxing the producers out of business. They already (the legislators) have shown they know how to bribe the people. Now they have a chance if they grab it to show the people that they can actually create concrete solutions that works. The people would feel better and I bet our reps will too. Remember in our quiver, that this gallop poll showed off another one of our arrows. Overall the majority of Americans still believe 50%-43% according to the poll that the government should do less. That is enough to easily win a national election. If Republicans can force some votes on their energy bills then we may have a chance to show the concrete plans we have created. We have a chance to offer a solution that works through less government. Gosh what a novel thing. The people may think otherwise. They might just start to think differently about the people against a realistic common sense approach to helping them with gas prices.

The article concluded the following.
-----from the article-----
On the other hand, the economic turbulence of 2008 could end up getting government into significant new income and wealth redistribution programs unless the Treasury and the Federal Reserve act soon to stabilize and reduce today's unmanageable food and energy price increases.
-----------------------------
That conclusion I don’t agree with because it assumes that the government will do nothing other than a wealth and redistribution program. Then states the reason for what will happen will be that the Treasury and The Federal Reserve did nothing. It is assuming that only they can change things. Why I ask is that? Common practice maybe, but It’s not written in stone anyplace. I like to be more positive. I’d like to think the Constitution was written for a reason. That we have a representative democracy. Why not assume that the Federal Reserve will do nothing, and that our elected representatives will wake up and seize the moment; partially in response to the Gallop Poll numbers and other wildly popular Petitions (drill here, drill now). Perhaps they will realize they want to keep their jobs and will be the ones to do something concrete. On top of that how can the Fed increase production of food and oil?

Scratching my head over that logic but smiling over the ammunition the Gallop Poll has given those of our elected Representatives who are willing to offer that 84% of the population desiring a solution, some other choice than us throwing the Bums out.

Subtle Lessons.

Hat tip to wowOwow and columnist Liz Smith
-----link see video-----
http://www.wowowow.com/post/charlie-rose-george-will-liz-smith-46691
--------------------------
Long interview of George Will. I may have changed my ideas some after listening to George. I do appreciate that guy. Kind of puts me back on an even keel. Charlie a couple of times came close to losing it, by what Newt might call George Will’s “persistent optimism”.

Another subtle lesson I learned. This one comes from across the pond.

A quote from David Cameron. “No unfunded tax cuts” Think about that simple statement and the difference between simply saying “Cut Taxes” . There is a world of difference between the two. A cacophony of subtlety. The first accomplishes the second, but in what is a far more palatable way. A more palatable conservative way. The first denotes fiscal responsibility, the second threatens draconian measures. Which way would you prefer to accomplish the same thing? David Cameron knows and has the electoral victories and popular support to back it up.

----------------------------------------------
Check out my side bar near the top for “Updates From Across the Pond” for more Cameron stuff.

The two different ways show me the gulf that separates the new British “Bottom up Politics” From the American Conservative way. The English system deals in terms of facilitating the services the government provides. Making it work, by putting a conservative slant on things. Getting the private sector involved in running different aspects of the government thus funding future tax cuts. The Conservatives here seem more in your face, more all or nothing. Too “CUT TAXES” if you get my drift. I think we as a party have drifted too far from the people. While bashing Obama for his elitism, we need to offer something other than our own form of elitism. George Will tired me out. What is obvious to him takes me awhile to puzzle out. Before I tackle the big issues like breaking the union stranglehold on the quality of teaching, I need to educate my self with things like “no unfunded tax cuts” That is if I really want to make a difference. If I really want to help win an election.

Leaders Fight For Every Inch, Winning or Retreating

I’ve been blogging about the Guerilla War in the House against the failed energy policies of the past. That battle is the reflection of the sentiment (anger) bubbling up from the people over the gas prices and how the House and Senate aren’t doing anything to help. The “Guerilla members have been putting out positive “do something” efforts to highlight that anger they feel from their constituents. There has been a ground swell reflected in the increasing legislative attempts by some of the lesser known members to do something constructive. The Republican leadership had been floundering around after the recent special election losses. Now they have woke up and are adding their weight to the increasing effort to get the Congress as a whole to get behind the “drill here, drill now, pay less“ idea. The leaders are actually starting to lead. I’ve blogged about their success and how John Boehner the Republican House leader is truly becoming a leader in the effort. Letting (facilitating) the bottom up flow of sentiment. Helping to shape it into a coherent force. Check out Boehner’s latest attack of Pelosi and crew, in the following link.
-----link-----
http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=95278
--------------
For more of Leader Boehner’s efforts of late click on the home link or header to get to his home page. He is putting out a daily barrage. In the above link, he gives a pretty good description of how the Pelosi crew is at a loss, because their plans do nothing to lower prices, in fact they will raise them. They don’t know what to do. They are against a rock (the Green Peace type left wing attack machine that won‘t offer any compromise) and a hard place (the lower and middle income voters they claim they want to help but who are getting hurt the most by their failed policies).

Some of my Republican colleagues seem to think that the “Guerilla” efforts don’t amount to anything, aren’t worth doing. In and of themselves perhaps. Although standing up for the hopes of the people even if you think it useless does have it’s own reward. I think though that these efforts at voicing their constituent’s desires is working. Some of the “Guerillas” I’ve posted on like Tim Walberg, Dan Burton, Lynn Westmoreland, Tom Price. It is nice to see the “Guerilla” voice is becoming a Republican one. There are a lot more of these voices I haven’t found yet but I did find one.

Tom Feeney (R Fl) of the US House. Another Guerilla Warrior in the House.
-----link-----
http://www.house.gov/feeney/index.shtml
---------------
This shows Tom Feeney’s efforts. Below you will see two links from Tom Feeney’s site above that show the first two of the 10 reasons he has compiled that have led to the price at the pump we have now and how to correct it. These are his individual efforts to help keep the discontentment of his constituents the voters in the news and the minds of the Congressmen. A “Guerilla” effort made by a “Freedom Fighter” to lower gas prices in the real world and not the fantasy dreams of the left. To paraphrase another politician. “A little press hear, a little press there and pretty soon you’re talking Real Media” Also in an election year you’re talking Real Pressure. Enough constant pressure backed by growing public awareness and anger with a Congressional rating lower than the President’s , and some of the more “Common Sense” Democrat members may decide that they can vote for more drilling, a little here a little there. See the specific links below for the first two sniper shots. You know, this is real Bottom Up Politics. Even Jim Webb has felt the pressure. Democrats are looking for a way out without hurting their left wing base. They can’t without being crucified by them. We saw that in the Hillary vs. Obama battle if you want to take this into the Presidential Election Arena. But I digress, getting back to Tom Feeney one of the real doers. Looks like he’s putting these reasons out once a week.
-----link for #10 ------
http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/fl24_feeney/toptenenergy.shtml
-----link for #9 -------

-------------------------
Now I want to blog as one of the angry constituents that I am. I want to bring this high blown talk of “Guerilla” stuff to a more personal level. To where I live.
Feeney’ #10 mentions. (quote from #10) “Section 526 chokes off the flow of fuel from Canadian tar sands. Canada is one of America's most reliable allies and economic partners but the federal government cannot purchase this available fuel.”

If you read my blog, you know I’m from Michigan, because of that I’ve highlighted # 10. The reference to Canadian Tar Sands should ring a bell. See this link where I blogged about the Detroit refinery. This brings it back home to me, at a local level.
-----link-----
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080621/NEWS06/806210341/1008/NEWS0
---------------
Notice the part about Canada’s tar oil sand.
-----quote from source above-----
“Although the refinery's size, even after the addition, isn't remarkable (it'll be midsized among the nation's 143 refineries), the new addition will be geared for squeezing gasoline and diesel fuel from controversial Alberta tar sands -- unconventional heavy oil that has become more attractive as oil prices skyrocket.”
----------------------------------------
While the refinery addition will not guarantee to lower gas prices, it will in less than two years be pumping into the supply 400,000 gallons a day. Can’t hurt. If I put 20 gallons in my tank a day, it would take me 20,0000 days to use up one day’s output from the expansion. If the Numbers don’t seen to fit. Remember the difference between bpd and gallons per day. The main point is valid. Whether it is 400,000 gallons a day or 4,000 a day. It is a positive constructive thing, it works no matter how small. It even doesn’t require government money to do it. It fits into my own slogan of “Make Do, Make it Now, Make it Work”.

Think also that this is a small refinery and a small expansion of it. Now multiply that by say 10 new refineries and lots of major expansions. I think it becomes more clear. Add to that new nuclear while increasing and giving incentives to alternative energy efforts and the more efficient use of our Tax dollars, will give you the “all of the above energy package” of the Republicans House. That package brings us back to John Boehner. You can find his site on my side bar under “Old Standby Links. He has a link to a site about the “All of the above” energy package. I might add at this point I’ll be happy with a part of any of the above, we need something to build upon. The Michigan Refinery shows how it works and the speed with which free enterprise can do things. While you’re looking check out the Republican leaders site in the Senate, Mitch McConnell just below Boehner’s on my side bar. He has been pushing the idea for awhile now.

The refinery is one of those concrete steps that we need more of, to start to change the upward price movement of gas to a downward one. Small yet concrete, actually doing something. Not the big talk that does nothing. To re-paraphrase “A little concrete here, a little concrete there, and pretty soon you have a Real Highway” Oh Yeah. It’ll be one that we can afford to buy the gas to drive on.

WAY TO MUCH NEWS

UPDATES OF INTERESTS

I’m posting the following to help me catch up on what has been happening in the House and Senate and the world outside of the Energy efforts I’ve been concentrating on lately.

Man you ought to get the hatred already spewing forth from the left bloggs. The book is hardly more than a rumor won’t come out untill Aug. The big guns of the left are hoping to chop it off at the knees, they are afraid of another Swift Boat. The same publisher is publishing the title that published “Unfit for Command”. Plus a journalist from the prestigious National Review is writing it. The book’s title is “The Case Against Barack Obama” the sub title is perspective: “The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate.”

Can’t wait. How good it is will be easily seen by the amount of hate that spews from the Left. The “Hate-o-Meters” will be pegging the red.
------------------------------------------------------------------

This next one has me asking where does Political Correctness stop. The Next step in the Fairness Doctrine?

If you can be sued for thinking wrong, why not set up a program to reeducate everyone. Oh yeah the NEA is already working on that, not to worry.

They rely heavily on Russian Oil. They share a history and border with Russia. I too would want to be independent of them. Also notice in the article that the driving force for the change is political. Bottom up from the consumers paying too much up through the ranks untill the leaders change policy to fit the people. Sounds familiar to me. Lol Newt wins the Volkswagen.lol

John Boehner gets the unemployment bill compromised and worked out.

---------------
My opinion is that The Republican leaders in House and Senate are finding themselves with some leverage from their backing of the Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay less movement. By taking the lead in what they are calling the “all of the above” energy idea. They are again hitting their stride. We did get funding for the war, got a lot of what we wanted in the unemployment area, and got a bill for the Veterans both sides could be proud of. We had to give in on most of the Medicaid changes the Democrats wanted. I consider that a pretty good deal, made by Boehner.

This next article from Politico compliments Democrat leader Hoyer in the House on his negotiating skills in getting the FISA bill passed.

--------------
Compromises were made as to what conservatives wanted, but the war against terror can continue. Judging from the hate coming from the left, and some of his coleagues in the quote below, I would say we came out pretty good.
-----quote from the politico article-----
— but now finds himself subjected to a barrage of criticism from his party’s left.

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) called the House bill a “capitulation.” Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald called Hoyer an “evil, craven enabler of the Bush administration.” Firedoglake.com blogger Jane Hamsher — delivering the lowest possible blow from the liberal blogosphere — declared Hoyer “the new Joe Lieberman.”
-------------------------------------------
Pay close attention to the reference to the Blue Dogs and others who were making a “Discharge Petition” that was in the works, look doable. The threat of that seems to be what got Hoyer to make the necessary concessions and take a possibly harmful and controversial battle off the table before the election.

Link to Cameron’s latest volley for the Conservatives in England. See the video about survey of workers in their National Health Service. Notice in the article the old liberal lines that any change would hurt the colossus and interrupt the changes that are already under way that will fix it. The truth is that those fixes have been under way starting with setting the thing up in the first place.

Below is a link to a Pew study of why conservatives are happier than liberals. While it seem their point of view is liberal (60 second psyche’s is liberal) The obvious conclusion stands out from the liberalese double talk which in itself is a downer.

---------------
The “obvious conclusion” I refer to is that we conservatives accept the way things are now with all the limitations that liberals bemoan and cry about and then we do something constructive about the problem. We can admit more freely that what we are doing in and of itself may not change the world but will change our little corner of it and that is enough. Another thing to keep in mind is brought out through a book I have listed on my side bar. “Who Really Cares” by Arthur C. Brooks. It shows conservatives give more to charity than liberals who seem stuck in the “bemoaning” stage which prevents actions. It helps show that action is the key to happiness. Doing something brings us into the world. Doing things makes one happy.

Page From Newt

MCCAIN BORROWS ANOTHER PAGE FROM NEWT.

Wherever McCain is getting this stuff from doesn’t matter, it’s gaining traction. It is keeping the momentum going, it is building upon the momentum of the Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less ideas fostered by Newt and Congress as I’ve been posting about and the Republican leadership is getting behind it too. Newt crystallized the concept, but the idea has been a Republican one for a long time. The Democrats had been able to cast the Republicans as being on the side of big oil against the little guy. McCain is becoming the leader was nominated to be. A straight shooter a maverick coming up with real concrete solutions for the short term and longer term ways to obtain future goals. He is pissing off my best conservative friends. Everyone thought Kenedy was nuts to put a man on the moon in less than 10 years. He probably was but we did it. Making a better battery has to be easier than that.

---------------
This is great as it forces the opposition to in effect say we can’t do it, or it won’t help us in the short term, or let’s conserve more so we’ll use less, or we should be taxing oil more. You’ve heard it before over and over. If McCain can keep this up the American people will be pretty sick and tired of hearing it too.
With this kind of positive concrete solution, he is reversing that trend and putting the Democrats in an illogical position. A position where their arguments are counter intuitive and not user friendly. For people who don’t understand liberalese, it’s common sense baby. These drilling petitions in and out of Congress and being pushed by the Republican leaders finally are finally turning into a real bottom up movement. The public has finally gotten enough of the we can’t do it attitude from the constant drumbeat of the far left. We know we can, we’ve done it before. I pray John McCain will keep this up. There is plenty by way of constructive ideas out there. Newt has a bunch. Look also at the young Turks in the party like Tim Walberg. There is vitality out there I pray McCain can tap into it. If the leaders don’t want to go along ignore them. He is surprising me. I’m learning to like surprises.

I live in Michigan and on the 21st the following was announced after a long hard battle.

Too little too late? Won’t effect the price of a gallon of gas in Texas. Ask the pile driver who is immediately starting work. I’ll bet he and his family are happy. The people who will fill the 135 new permanent jobs won’t be saying what the liberal far left guy was quoted as saying.
-----quote from article------
"That's really disappointing," said Donele Wilkins, director of Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice.

He probably sees this uproar about gas prices as bitter people clinging to such old fashioned ideas as working for a living. Don’t they know that the government will look after them?

from that single addition to one small refinery. Not much maybe in the great scheme of things but a trickle that could turn into a gusher if other refineries did the same and some new ones were brought on line to handle our new drilling efforts off shore and on land. Couple that with a lot of nuclear plants starting up. With new prizes and red tape cutting as incentives for innovative technologies that work to come to the front (See McCain battery prize and the tax credit for auto makers of carbon free emission cars)----all of that put together and you have a huge change not only in price of gas, but a sea change in the general attitude of Americans from a Carter like malaise to a robust positive can do anything attitude.

For this to work, John McCain is going to have to use all the support and new ideas out there bubbling up from the grass roots. He seems to opening up. We are going to have to help him do this. This is new territory for Republicans, to trust somebody that doesn’t adhere to the orthodox conservative dogma and is willing to try new ideas. Reagan Republican ideas. Maybe FDR Democrat ideas. Ideas that help the government work better. In a conservative way. There are ideas galore out there not just on the Republican or the Democrat side but on the American side. Imagine being able to vote for a good American and leave it at that. I’d be out of a job.lol but then again I don’t get paid so I would be ahead of the game.

Too much going on I have to post twice today. lol

The Guerilla Gas War.

House Republicans are now firmly behind changing American Energy policy. The leadership of John Boehner in the House is becoming evident as he organizes the opposition. Not just a few lone voices out there any more. Like Walberg, Westmoreland, Burton. Below is a link to John Boehner’s web site which lists what he’s been up to.
-----link-----
http://republicanleader.house.gov/
---------------
Getting back to the Guerilla War type of thing I especially liked the 2 min. speeches tactic he used, I was again reminded me of Newt’s early Republican Revolution.
-----link-----
http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=94998
---------------
This is a full court press covering every possible way of getting the word out and for once the
Republicans seem to be all getting on board. The Senate under Mitch McConnell is ramping up their efforts also.

The whole new dimension to the equation that fired this up and is leading by example is Newt Gingrich. He brings a New Media a Web 2.0 presence to the debate. He knows Guerilla Marketing. He also as a regular on FOX helps get the message out in the Major Media. I had to laugh last nite I was watching an in-depth report by FOX about the facts behind the “Drill Here” frenzy then they went to people on the street to see what they thought and the last guy on the street was ---- Newt Gingrich. He said one sentence with a straight face. I fell off my chair laughing. That is Guerrilla Marketing. How he pulled that off I don’t have a clue.

Boehner’s site has this other site of theirs linked in it called “the all of the above energy solutions” I linked the part I liked about the list of “discharge Petitions”. Notice the first one , the No more excuses petition. That is the one I had blogged about and how Tim Walberg of Mi. was leading the charge well he was and the link shows the other discharge petitions since then.
-----link-----
http://www.gop.gov/energy/multimedia/calendar.html
---------------
I applaud their efforts. The word is getting out. I was excited when I noticed that I was given a hat tip on Dan Burton’s Blog. He is a conservative leader of the House and one of the original backers of the Drill now movement. I blogged about seeing him along with Tom Price backing Lynn Westmoreland’s petition in one of my Guerilla posts. He seemed amazed that someone actually listened. All I can say is “Build it and they will come” Keep on doing what you’re doing.
-----link-----
http://www.danburtonblog.com/2008/06/blogger-writes.html
---------------
Check out the rest of his web site, as I’ve blogged before it is full of information on this battle. Not only on this battle. If you have the time scroll down through Dan’s blog and see all the different efforts he’s making. You can see why he is called a Conservative leader in the House. He has been preaching energy solutions in a common sense way for a long time.

Another Make Do, Make It Now, Make It Work Moment

Michelle Malkin is doing something really nice with Melanie Morgan from and along with Move America Forward. A Web a thon if you will. A selfless act from a lot of different people and groups and business’, for the good of our troops.

--------------
The quote below is from the article above, Michelle’s words tell how a good idea with the right people will take off and get a life of it’s own. Reminds me of Newt’s “Drill Here” petition. My whole idea of Bottom Up politics. Making the politicians and bureaucracies fit the solution.
-----quote-----
The tireless Melanie Morgan got the ball rolling a few months ago during an e-mail exchange we were having about the untapped synergies between radio, grass-roots conservative activism, and the Internet. I introduced her to Brad Hunstable at UStream and things took off like a rocket. The MAF team has amazing organizational skills and boundless energy; UStream’s staff has also gone above and beyond in making the program happen. I’m honored to play a small part in this unprecedented event and can’t wait for you to join us for an unforgettable day. Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and be sure to tune in.
---------------
The good idea, the purpose of this, is to send the most ever care packages to our troops overseas. Michele says. “You can purchase care packages right now, right here, in advance of the web-a-thon. Buy early and often! MAF has raised over $200,000 in advance of the telethon. Our goal is $500,000” I can’t but hear an echo of the idea that we Americans can come up with solutions to a problem and promptly put them to work. My slogan Make Do, Make It Now, Make It Work. Is an attempt at the same idea. Hear are some people coming up with a plan and others chipping in to help make it work with what is available. No government money I know of is involved, but that would be taken if necessary to make the plan work, and not taken if it slowed it down. The link below takes you to the order site and shows the different packages available to send the troops.
-----link-----
http://www.thecampaignstore.com/store/default.asp?parentid=409
--------------

I’m doing the $15.99 package as befits my station in life. Something really neat is that President Reagan’s Jelly Belly jelly beans are included in all packages which the troops asked for to give to the kids over there. On the Jelly Belly pack in US and Iraqi will be the following words. Denoting the “candy diplomacy” the personal thing.
-------Jelly Belly Inscription-------
A gift from the American people in
hope that your country will one day
enjoy the freedom and opportunities
that we have in the United States.
-----------------------------------------
If you donate $100 or more you get your own Jelly Bellies. Oh well too bad for me.
I know the troops have plenty to eat. This isn’t about that. It is to show the overwhelming support of the people back home for our troops so far away, and to thank them for what they are doing. I guess I’ll just buy some cheapies at Meijer’s and pretend Reagan gave them to me, while I smile thinking of how some Soldier will be practicing “candy diplomacy” with Jelly Belly’s I in Muskegon made possible through the vast network of Americans on the web. Again Thank You Michelle

Looking forward to listening to this today. The link to Newt’s email is below

If you miss it the e station Right Talk has five channels and they rotate each hour during the day. Look for the Leading the Majority logo and click on the channel. At the top of the hour.
The first speaker should give a lot of insight into what “Shale Oil” is, how it is mined and other stuff that I don’t know anything about. We sure are hearing a lot about it. I want to know hopefully this will do it.

Also the second part could be good about dealing with negative ideas in a campaign.

If that link doesn’t work go to the Right Talk link below

http://www.rightalk.com/

They have some good conservatives appear on the shows.
One word of caution, I had trouble with the new windows browser, I ended up using Firefox to access the site.

"Bottom Up Politics" on a National Scale

First it was Newt, taking polls listening gathering information about what the public really thought. Putting it in his Platform for America. Then the surge in gas prices and the vast majority of the public wanting something to be done with it. Next Newt came up with the "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" petition drive idea and the public enthusiacally responded. Newt acting as the facilator for public opinion "bubbling up" from the "Bottom Up" and offering conservative solutions that common sense tells us will work. Then the House with Walberg then Westmorland then Boehner bouyed and strengthened by Newts Petition came on board. Now below I show what the Senate is doing to get on board.

As much as I tend to think the Senate Republicans and the leadership is way behind the times, I have to admit that Mitch McConnell the Republican leader in the Senate has been fighting a good fight against the tax everything energy plan the Democrat Senators tried to get through. (us old guys have to stick together) They put up a hell of a fight against the Warner Lieberman cap and trade Climate Tax Bill. The fight should by any measure should not have been as hard as it was. The bill would of put an immediate 50+ cents tax on a gallon of gas. It would of cost jobs. All it would of done is collect trillions for the government to spend as wisely as they have in the past. Should have been a no brainer. Well with the media help and the fear mongering by the left about dying Polar Bears it was a reasonably close thing and the Republicans had to do a lot of hustling. Still the Dems nearly got ½ of the vote of the senate to stop the filibuster. They needed 3/5, But the Senate republicans did stop the bill, I will give them the credit that’s due.
-----link-----
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121269184525849383.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
-------------
The real credit I’m giving is to the Democrats for the way they put their foot in their mouth with this outrageous bill when crying about how bad the economy was and that the people couldn’t afford to eat. The chutzpah of these guys. That’s Jewish, in my neighborhood we say, how stupid and how arrogant can these elite (m)*&&^&&(Fers)*(*^(*& Be? Libs in San Franciscan speak would say. Golly I guess the public couldn’t grasp the subtleties of the plan, they were probably clinging to tightly to their gas caps, and Halliburton made those gas caps so you can see that it‘s Bush‘s fault. Common sense mixed with reality I come away feeling sorry for the Stupid Bastards.

Gee that was fun. Watching someone get caught with their hand in the cookie jar is always fun. I guess I’d have to say they got caught blue handed.

The author of that article obviously didn’t see Newt coming and the Tsunami of the jump in gas price. None of us really did to the extent Newt did. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say none of us were able to act as well and quickly and with such reach to the situation as Newt did.
-----quote-----
Environmentalists have always eyed 2009 as the real target year for enactment. But there was no show of strength this week and cap-and-trade may have reached its political high water mark. Conservatives at least are in a far stronger position now to demand major pro-growth tax cuts in exchange for new global warming taxes.
-- Stephen Moore
-----------------
The whole “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” phenomenon kind of snuck up on us. Except for Newt. He started the whole process before the 2006 elections. Anyway, the Dems just as they were getting their foot back out Newt and the House and now with the Senate pushed in the other one. It is a good smack down still going on. Made me proud of the effort. It’s been awhile for that feeling, so if you think I‘m reaching forgive me. I think at worst I’m using creative optimism. Lol At best I’m seeing a rosy picture if we can keep our feet out of our mouths. The Democrats with the words from the radical left have fallen over those words and don’t know how to get up.

After the vote Mitch McConnell the Senate leader stays fired up the link is from June 6th.
-----link-----
http://mcconnell.senate.gov/record.cfm?id=298839&start=1
---------------
Then he kept hitting them over and over applying the pressure. The Dems are on the ropes in the Senate too.
06/10/08 McConnell: Don’t Permanently Raise Taxes to Temporarily Cut Taxes
06/11/08 American Families Need Relief, Not More ‘Gradual Adjustment’ in the Price at the Pump
06/12/08 America Needs More Energy, Not a ‘Gradual Adjustment’ in Gas Prices
06/17/08 McConnell: We Need More American Energy Now
06/18/08 Support for $4 Gas Not a ‘Common View,’ McConnell Says
06/18/08 McConnell Calls on Congress to Increase American Energy Production
The above Prs can be found at Mitch’s web site.
-----link-----
http://mcconnell.senate.gov/press_office.cfm
---------------

Now we still need to apply enough extra pressure through the truth and common sense and an in your face way to get enough strength to form a bipartisan majority and get some actual drilling done. Perhaps when Newt presents his petition on the Fourth of July, with all our signatures on it, over 1 million strong. Maybe that will turn the tide. I feel the people are waking up and are ready to do the job and solve the energy process. The legislators are beginning to get worried. Man I’m begging write you Congressman and Senators. Write an editorial for your paper. Talk to your neighbors. Put a Drill Here Sign in your car. This might be the tipping point when we embrace doing something about the energy problem. Something concrete. When we make something work. If Americans can do that they will remember what it’s like to take control and we will be on our way. If we can do that as a country again, our party will again have learned how to facilitate the voice and will of the people through government into concrete action. That will be a beautiful thing to see. The Democrats and their constant drum beat of the sky is falling and fear mongering will wither on the vine. The good FDR Dems will remain. That is ok, that is as it should be.
